With summer drawing to a close, some of Charlottesville’s best concert venues are boasting impressive schedules in upcoming months. If you are looking for a change in your Summer routine or a good way to spend some time when the school year starts and the homework is still easy, check out this list for some of WUVA’s most anticipated anticipated shows. None of the concerts top $40 and most are under $15!
Tuesday, July 31 Dr. Dog with Borrowed Beams of Light
Indie rock band Dr. Dog is first on the list. This band from West Grove, Pennsylvania will be coming to the Jefferson this July. Their unique sound and catchy lyrics are expected to draw out a lively crowd to receive this up and coming act.
Tickets are $18.00 in advance and $20.00 at the door. The show starts at 9:00 and the doors open at 8:00
Sunday, August 19 Old Crow Medicine Show with The Lumineers and Pokey LaFarge
Anyone who has stepped foot into a party at U.V.a is familiar with Old Crow Medicine Show’s famous track “Wagon Wheel.” However, don’t be tricked into believing that this band doesn’t have more to offer. Old Crow’s set list runs deep with a combination of folk and bluegrass influences that makes it impossible not to catch people dancing in the aisles at every show. The Lumineers, who are opening for Old Crow and have been recently made famous by their song “Ho Hey”, also tout an impressive discography. Their sweet, melodic tracks feature just the right amount of folk and will be the perfect way to bring in Old Crow to Charlottesville’s Pavilion.
Tickets are $38.00 for general admission. The show is all ages and the gates will open at 6:00 pm. Make sure to get there early and grab a good spot!
Friday, August 24 The Hackensaw Boys
Similar to Old Crow Medicine Show in sound and style, the Hackensaw Boys have perfected their own form of Americana. After getting their start here in Charlottesville, they have released five albums and have spent years touring the U.S. and Europe where they have always been excitedly received. The Hackensaw Boys’ show at the Jefferson this August is perfect for anyone looking to listen to some real country music.
Doors open at 8:00, tickets are $13 in advance and $15 at the door.
Thursday, August 30 Pretty Lights with 12th Planet and Paul Basic
The anticipation surrounding this concert has only been building since the announcement that Pretty Lights would be coming to the Charlottesville Pavilion. Colorado based producer Derek Vincent Smith, the man behind the music, is best known for his use of samples, synth riffs, and electronic beats. The concert is sure to be a good one that will keep the crowd upbeat and get everyone ready for a night out on the downtown mall. You also don’t want to miss the openers, 12th Planet and Paul Basic. These up an coming acts will be sure to impress.
Tickets are $28 and the gates for the 7:00 show open at 6:00.
September 7 Chatham County Line
The opening of The Southern Cafe and Music Hall after the Summer break is going to be happily welcomed by all music lovers in Charlottesville who have been missing the chill vibes of this venue. The Southern will host Chatham County Line as one of its first acts since the break. The four man band has seen great success since its beginnings as an American bluegrass group in 1999 and the show at the Southern is likely to reflect this band’s lively career.
The doors for this show open at 7:00. The concert is mostly seated and is only $12, a small price to pay to see this awesome band.
September 12, The Milk Carton Kids with The Brendan Hines
The Southern will also host The Milk Carton Kids and Brendan Hines. The Milk Carton Kids are a simple duo with just two acoustic guitars. Their harmonizing, well written lyrics, and undeniable chemistry
make every song better than the last. The Milk Carton kids produce great music and their live presence immediately makes them a crowd favorite. The Milk Carton Kids have released their first two albums for free online to their fans, so there’s no excuse not to check them out!
